Visit ChadKirk Chapel and Country EState

The chapel is usually open to the public on the last Sunday of the month, from 12:00 noon until 4:00 pm. When the chapel is open, refreshments are available. Please check the calendar for confirmation of opening dates and times.

There’s plenty to do and see at Chadkirk. The facilities include picnic areas, a small wild-camping area, the historic Chadkirk Chapel and walled garden, farmland that’s managed as a local nature reserve, a circular trail (the Chadkirk Trail) with information boards – and Chadkirk Bridge, which provides links from Chadkirk Estate to more trails.

Getting here

By car

Chadkirk Chapel and Country Estate is accessed via Vale Road, which is just off the A627 (Otterspool Road) outside Romiley. As you enter Vale Road, there is ample parking in the car parking area on the left-hand side of the road. The chapel is a 700-yard walk from the car park. Satnav routes may give misleading directions from Romiley village, by way of Church Lane and Chadkirk Road. However, that route is practicable only for cyclists and pedestrians. The only vehicular access is by way of Otterspool Road (A627) and Vale Road, a single-track, no through road.

By bus

The nearest bus stops to Chadkirk are at Romiley Station (a half-mile walk – services 382/383/384) and at Dooley Lane/Stockport Road junction (a mile or so’s walk – services 358/375/383/384). Services run frequently to and from Stockport and Marple, with the 358/375 less frequently to and from Mellor, New Mills and Hayfield. More information can be found on the Transport for Greater Manchester website.

By train

Regular weekday services stopping at Romiley Station (a half-mile walk) call at intermediate stations and run between Manchester and Marple, Rose Hill, New Mills and Sheffield. There is an hourly Sunday service. From Romiley Station cross the road ( B6104, Stockport Road) then head down Church Lane, which is to the right of the Romiley Arms.

On foot or by bike

Chadkirk is crossed by two long distance walks, the Goyt Valley Way and the Midshires Way. These give access through quiet countryside along the Goyt Valley to Stockport (signposted as the Alan Newton Way) to the west. To the east they pass through Marple and beyond, along the Peak Forest Canal. For enthusiastic walkers, the Midshires Way finishes 200 miles away in Oxfordshire. Chadkirk Chapel is signposted from these routes. Chadkirk is also on the National Cycle Route 55 from Ironbridge to Preston, giving off-road access to Stockport and Marple. The Peak Forest Canal also provides an easy cycle route to and from Chadkirk.

Disabled access

The historic nature of Chadkirk Chapel and Country Estate provides some limitations for the disabled, though the site caters as far as possible for disabled visitors. There are specific car parking spaces close to the chapel, away from the main car park: please follow the signs – be aware that this is a single-track lane until you reach the parking spaces. When open, the chapel has a wheelchair-accessible toilet.

Toilets

The toilets at the car park are currently closed, and we understand are unlikely to reopen. There is an accessible public toilet in the chapel, when it is open. The nearby Dobbies garden centre (a very short walk from the car park, on A627 Dooley Lane) has toilet facilities for customers using their cafeteria. Stockport Community Toilet Scheme enables members of the public to use business premises without purchase. The nearest toilets agreed under this scheme are in the Romiley Arms, opposite Romiley Station.

Refreshments

There is a small kiosk in the chapel, operated by the Friends of Chadkirk, which provides a limited range of hot and cold drinks and snacks when the chapel is open to the public. There are many refreshment outlets in Romiley and Marple. The nearest one to Chadkirk is either in Dobbies garden centre, or the Chadkirk Little Kitchen Café in Chadkirk Business Park (opposite the car park).

Dogs

Chadkirk Estate is dog-friendly, and popular with dog walkers. There are litter bins: in the car park; close to St Chad’s Well; where the Alan Newton Way joins Vale Road. Please use them. Note: there are no litter bins at the chapel or in the chapel grounds.
