An evening of Christmas Ghost stories

An evening of ghost stories and tales of horror

Telling ghost stories at Christmas was a popular tradition in Victorian Britain – and the Friends of Chadkirk are reviving this tradition. Imagine: the chapel, dimly lit – in the corner by the statue of St Chad, a storyteller. There will be gothic tales to chill the bone, along with alcoholic drinks and refreshments to warm the spirit (cash only).

Readers include ex-BBC presenter Colin Sykes and his wife Janette - plus a few of the Friends of Chadkirk.

We suggest that this event is not suitable for younger children.

This event is tickets only, but tickets are free of charge. We do ask, please, only book tickets if you intend to come and not ‘just in case’ – we have limited space and this stops others from coming and leaves the chapel looking empty.

Tickets are available now from Ticketpass.

ON THE DAY, PLEASE HELP US TO MANAGE THE EVENT

For those of you who are arriving by car, the car park for the chapel is on the left, just as you turn into Vale Road from Otterspool Road.

Please be aware that Vale Road provides access to residents’ houses both on Vale Road near the car park and further up, past the chapel, at Burymewick. Vale Road is single track for some of its distance so please show patience and respect to those who need to access their houses or park outside them.

After parking, you will need to walk to the chapel on foot. From the car park, walk down Vale Road until it becomes a single track – and then take the footpath at the side of the field until you reach either the chapel or the well.

Live music from 60% Angels – Chapel open to the public

Live music from 60% Angels – Chapel open to the public

Our September entertainment comes from the intriguingly named 60% Angels – a marvellous group made up of top-notch local talent. The music is melodic blues-influenced – but is by no means limited to that. Expect soulful ballads, country rock, boogie-woogie piano, and a bit of soul. Stones, Bonnie Raitt, Marcia Ball, Delbert McClinton, and Lucinda Williams.

What’s in a name? Well, this name is derived from the full band name, Montgomery’s Angels, in turn a play on the name of the lead vocalist Mandy Montgomery and the song “Angel From Montgomery” by Bonnie Raitt. Montgomery’s Angels is a five-piece band, but on occasions just three of them get together to play smaller or more intimate venues when a full-on band just isn’t appropriate.

Those three are: Mandy Montgomery on lead vocals and harmonica, Paul Minshull on piano and backing vocals, and Andy Burns on bass and backing vocals.

All three have had a lifetime in live music in and around Stockport and further afield.

Mandy started singing professionally at 17 recording for Rocket Records in Strawberry Studios, with her long-time friend Paul Young of Sad Café singing backing vocals for her. She also sang with Dougie James Soul Train in the late 70s when they supported The Jacksons on their British tour, including The Apollo Theatre in Manchester. She’s a great advocate of encouraging local talent and has been an integral member of the team organising the annual Stockport Blues and Roots Festival held at the Garrick Theatre and the Spinning Top music venue for the last three years. She also co-hosts the monthly Blues Jam night at The Spinning Top. Mandy is a warm, vibrant and energetic performer who loves nothing more than getting the audience engaged.

Paul Minshull is a virtuoso piano player who has toured with Chuck Berry, Louisiana Red, and Lowell Fulsom, and has been a member of several long-standing local bands including the Blues Blasters.

Andy Burns was a founding member of the Jackson Burns Band, a respected local outfit writing and recording original material, and the new wave band Stress which recorded at the much-lamented Hologram Studios on Park Street in Stockport. He became a regular member of Manchester writer and performer George Borowski’s band in 2007 and more recently has regularly featured on bass with the legendary blues guitarist Norman Beaker at the Stockport Blues and Roots festival each September. He is scheduled to play with Norman at the Colne Blues Festival in late August.

Bird and bat box making

Bird and bat box making

7 September at Chadkirk Chapel will be our annual bird and bat box making day. This is aimed at children, who will be led through creating a box to house birds or bats.

All children must be accompanied by an adult, and it’s suggested that you bring a hammer if you can. Materials will be provided. Chadkirk Chapel will be open to the public.

We also have colouring sheets and giant games to amuse those children not taking part, such as Giant Connect 4, Giant Jenga, Giant Dominos and so on (no charge to use).

We’ll be selling hot and cold drinks, cakes and snacks – cash only.

For those coming in cars, unless disabled, can we please ask that you park in the car park at the entrance to Vale Road and make your way to the chapel on foot. When you get to the corner of the lane, we suggest that the path to the left of Vale Road is not only safer, it gives you a better view of the Coronation Meadow.

The dressing of the well 2024

Join us for a community event day at Chadkirk Chapel, to celebrate the dressing of the well.

Last year’s well-dressing, video courtesy of Dog Haus Creative in Romiley

We open our doors at 12:00noon and should be winding up around 5:00pm. The formal blessing of the well takes place at 1:00pm. The well will be blessed by Father Gregory Hallam, from St. Aidan's Orthodox Church, Manchester.

In the chapel, we will be serving hot and cold drinks, cake and Prosecco. At the moment we are still cash only.

Outside in the gardens, there will be lots going on.

The Stockport Silver Band, Stockport Ukulele Players and Stockport Morris Men will be performing.

There will be stalls selling locally grown plants, second-hand books, cards, paintings, crafts, Chadkirk Comfrey Oil and Chadkirk Elderflower Cordial.

Local community groups will also be taking part; there will be a making and crafting stall and, of course, a tombola!

On the day, please help us to manage the event

For those of you who are arriving by car, the car park for the chapel is on the left, just as you turn into Vale Road from Otterspool Road. Stewards will be on hand to direct you.

There will be overflow parking further down Vale Road, but please don’t drive down unless directed. Please do not park on Vale Road.

From the car park or overflow car park, walk down Vale Road until it becomes a single track – and then take the footpath at the side of the field until you reach either the chapel or the well.

The nature of Chadkirk Estate is that it was not built to accommodate large numbers of people or cars, so some cooperation is helpful. There will be a ‘drop off’ facility for the less agile, which is 100m from the chapel and well – after dropping off, your car would need to be parked in the main car park or overflow car park. A small number of blue badge spaces are also available. If you need to use either of these, please ask a steward. There will be portaloos on site, near the chapel.
